BARF it up!!

What is the BARF diet?

There are a couple of different acronyms – Bones And Raw Food or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. The founder of this diet, Dr. Ian Billinghurst, started this movement of feeding dogs and cats raw food just as their wild ancestors ate.

He has written numerous books about this natural diet. He, along with every other advocate, feels strongly that this diet is the best way for your pet to reach optimum health.

The goal of BARF:

  • optimize your pet’s health
  • boosts energy
  • increase life span
  • decreases vet care

Thousands of years of breeding wild animals to domesticated pets not only created several different breeds, but also changed their biological nourishment. Today, pets are fed commercial pet food, which includes processed ingredients, such as grains, additives and preservatives. The raw food diet revolves around the natural diet that our animals’ ancestors’ had out in the wild.

The menu includes:

  • raw meat – preferably beef, chicken or lamb
  • raw bones
  • organ meat
  • fruits and vegetables
  • supplements

This diet omits processed grains, such as those found in commercial pet food. Due to research, it is believed by biological diet supporters that grains can lead to a variety of degenerative diseases.

Also omitted is cooked food due to the fact that animals in the wild have never had anyone to cook or prepare food for them, which left it up to them to fend for themselves.

This is not to say that your cat or dog have to hunt for themselves. It simply means to use raw whole foods that are readily available as this diet imitates the natural diet eaten by animals in the wild as close as realistically possible.
