What does anemia mean for dogs and cats?

Symptoms:
  • Pale or white gums.

  • Loss of appetite.

  • Weak or tired.

  • Labored breathing and fast pulse.

What Causes Anemia?

It is when dogs or cats have a low red blood cell count, which carries oxygen throughout the body. It can be caused by blood loss, red blood cell damage and insufficient generation of red blood cells.

This alone is not the primary disease, but is an indication of an underlying problem. If you think your pet is anemic, please see your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Here’s What You Can Do For Cats and Dogs

Include meat in your pet’s diet

Meat is rich in protein, which helps produce red blood cells making it possible for the body to carry oxygen throughout. If possible, use high quality organic or free range meats to avoid harmful pathogens such as salmonella. Steaming the meat will help rid of pathogens.

Make stew

Meat, vegetables and broth is a good blood strengthener.

Vitamin B

Add vitamin B to your pet’s regular regimen. Consult your veterinarian as to how much to give your pet.

Vitamin C

This vitamin helps the body absorb iron from the intestine. For fifteen pounds or less, give 250 milligrams per day. For fifteen pounds or more, give 1,000 milligrams per day.

Acupressure

Here is a list of allergy pressure points that could help your pet:

  • ST-36 (Stomach 36) located on the outside of the hind leg below the knee.

  • GV-14 (Governing Vessel 14) located where the neck and shoulder blades meet.
